Paraguay 🇵🇾

authentic, cheap, and untouristed South America
culturebudget

✔️ Pros

  • one of the least touristy countries in South America
  • much cheaper than nearby Uruguay, Chile, or Argentina
  • useful side trip from northern Argentina, especially around Encarnación

⛔ Cons

  • limited major highlights and little classic sightseeing
  • less polished, less predictable, and more chaotic than nearby countries
  • requires more practical awareness, especially in cities and transport hubs
  • hot climate can be tiring outside winter months

☑️ What to Do

🏙️ Spend a few days in Asunción for old streets, riverside areas, markets, and everyday city life
🏛️ Visit Encarnación and the nearby Jesuit Missions as the strongest cultural stop
🌊 Use the Paraná River region for a slower, less touristy borderland experience

📝 Notes

🌍 Why Visit Paraguay?

Paraguay is not a polished travel destination.
It offers a cheaper, quieter, and more local version of South America, with very little mass tourism and few places designed specifically for foreign visitors.

Paraguay works best as:

  • a short cultural side trip from Argentina (e.g., from Posadas to Encarnación and the Jesuit Missions)
  • a few days in Asunción

🌤️ Seasons

Winter is the most comfortable season for travel: less heat, lower humidity, and easier city walking. Summer can be very hot and humid, which makes Paraguay feel more tiring than it looks on the map.

🚌 Transport / Logistics

Buses are the main way to move between cities.
Asunción, Encarnación, and Ciudad del Este are connected by regular long-distance routes.

⚠️ Safety

Paraguay requires more awareness than Uruguay or Chile.
It is not necessarily dangerous for a careful visitor, but it feels less polished and less predictable.
