Overview

A wildlife-focused itinerary centered on Puerto Madryn and Península Valdés, one of South America’s most important marine ecosystems.

This region is defined by seasonality. When conditions align, it offers some of the best coastal wildlife observation in the Southern Hemisphere. Outside peak seasons, the experience is more limited and slower-paced.

Province: Chubut
Overall time: 3–5 days
Main focus: wildlife, marine life, open coastal landscapes
Best season: August–October (southern right whales)

Arrival & Puerto Madryn

Arrive in Puerto Madryn or nearby Trelew.

How to get there:
• Fly to Puerto Madryn (PMY) – closest airport
• Fly to Trelew (REL) + taxi or transfer (~1 hour)

Base:
• Puerto Madryn – 3 to 4 nights

What to do in town:
• Walk along the long beachfront promenade
• Relax on wide city beaches
• Visit the pier – sea lions are sometimes visible from town
• Sunset views over Golfo Nuevo

Puerto Madryn is compact, calm, and easy to navigate on foot.

Whale Watching – Puerto Pirámides

Visit Puerto Pirámides, the only settlement inside Península Valdés
and the main base for whale watching.

Main highlight:
• Southern right whales – often visible very close to shore and boats

Season notes:
• Best months: August–October
• July and November are unreliable
• Outside whale season, activities here are limited

How to visit:
• Rented car (strongly recommended)
• Organized tour from Puerto Madryn (limited schedules, expensive)

Duration:
• Half day

Península Valdés – Wildlife Circuit

Full-day exploration of Península Valdés (UNESCO World Heritage Site).

Animals commonly seen:
• Southern right whales (seasonal, offshore)
• Sea lions (year-round)
• Southern elephant seals (year-round, seasonal concentrations)
• Guanacos, Patagonian maras, ñandúes (steppe wildlife)
• Penguins (small colonies, seasonal)
• Orcas – rare and unpredictable

Key areas:
• Caleta Valdés – coastal inlet with seals and occasional penguins
• Punta Norte / Punta Delgada – seal colonies and cliffs
• Open Atlantic coastline and Patagonian steppe

How to visit:
• Rented car is the most practical option
• Tours exist but are restrictive in timing and routing

Duration:
• Full day

Penguins – Punta Tombo (Optional)

Optional visit to the Punta Tombo penguin colony.

Important notes:
• Very long distances
• Logistically easier from Trelew than from Puerto Madryn

Season:
• Penguins present mainly September–March

This is a full-day excursion and only worth adding if you have extra time.

Transportation

  • Rented car is strongly recommended for flexibility and park access
  • Tours are available but expensive and schedule-limited
