safaribeaches

Country: Kenya 🇰🇪

Overview

A classic Kenya itinerary combining African safari with a relaxed Indian Ocean beach stay.

This route focuses on:

  • Big wildlife
  • Open savannah landscapes
  • Optional Mount Kilimanjaro views
  • Recovery time at the coast

Important logistics note:

  • This is not a self-drive itinerary.
  • Safari parks require organized transport and guides.

Regions: Nairobi, Safari Park, Diani Beach
Overall time: 7–10 days
Main focus: wildlife + coast
Best season: June–October (dry season, best wildlife visibility)

Travel Logic

You must choose one of the following:

  • A pre-booked safari package (most common)
  • A private safari with driver-guide
  • A domestic flight safari (fly-in lodges)

Renting a car and driving independently between parks is not recommended.

Safari packages typically include:

  • 4x4 vehicle
  • Professional driver-guide
  • Park fees
  • Accommodation
  • Meals (often full board)

Arrival – Nairobi

Arrive at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (NBO).

Transport:
- Hotel-arranged airport transfer recommended
- Avoid independent taxis outside airport

Stay:
- 1 night near airport or Westlands

Optional short visits (only if schedule allows):
- Giraffe Centre
- Elephant orphanage (advance booking required)

Nairobi itself is not the focus of this trip.

Safari Option 1 – Amboseli National Park

Best for:
- Views of Mount Kilimanjaro
- Large elephant herds
- Open landscapes

Transport:
- 4–5 hour road transfer (included in safari package)
OR
- Short domestic flight + lodge pickup

Stay:
- 2–3 nights

Game drives:
- Morning and afternoon drives
- Kilimanjaro visibility best at sunrise

Amboseli is compact and ideal for a short safari.

Safari Option 2 – Maasai Mara

Best for:
- Classic "Lion King" landscapes
- Big cats
- Great Migration (July–October)

Transport:
- 5–6 hour road transfer
OR
- 45-minute flight from Nairobi + airstrip pickup

Stay:
- 2–3 nights

More wildlife density than Amboseli.
Higher cost, especially in migration season.

Safari Option 3 – Tsavo East / West

Best for:
- Fewer crowds
- Red elephants
- Larger, more rugged terrain

Transport:
- 4–6 hour road transfer from Nairobi

Stay:
- 2 nights

Often combined with coast transfer since Tsavo lies between Nairobi and Mombasa.

Safari → Nairobi → Coast

After safari, return to Nairobi (included in package).

Then travel to the coast:

Option 1 – Flight:
- Nairobi → Mombasa (1 hour)
- Transfer to Diani Beach (~1.5 hours)

Option 2 – SGR Train:
- Nairobi → Mombasa (modern, safe, ~5 hours)
- Transfer to Diani

Flights are faster and more convenient.
Train is scenic and reliable.

Diani Beach – Indian Ocean

Stay 2–4 nights at Diani Beach.

Why Diani:
- Clean white sand
- Calm turquoise water
- Good hotel infrastructure

Activities:
- Snorkeling
- Diving
- Wasini Island day trips
- Relaxed beach time

Transport:
- Local hotel-arranged drivers
- Avoid informal transport

This is the relaxation part of the trip.
