Nosy Be

Calm lagoons, lemurs, and coral reefs

Country: Madagascar 🇲🇬

Overview

Nosy Be is the easiest “island base” in Madagascar — and it feels very different from the classic Indian Ocean destinations.

Compared to places like the Maldives / Seychelles / Mauritius / Zanzibar, Nosy Be is:

  • more remote and less polished
  • more “wild” in atmosphere (simple infrastructure, fewer services)
  • more focused on nature add-ons beyond beaches (lemurs, rainforest, seasonal whales)

Why go:

  • You want a tropical island stay, but with a visible “Madagascar character”
  • You want easy day trips that add uniqueness (turtles, lemurs, small-island hopping)
  • You’ve already visited the more mainstream islands and want something different

Flights & access:

  • Nosy Be has its own airport (NOS), but direct international connections are limited.
  • Many itineraries route via Addis Ababa (Ethiopian Airlines) and/or via Réunion (Air Austral). Some routes can be seasonal.

Region: Northwest Madagascar
Base: Nosy Be
Overall time: 5–10 days
Main focus: snorkeling, small islands, light wildlife
Best season: May–November (drier); whales are seasonal (July–September)

Arrival

Arrive at Fascene Airport (NOS).

Transfer:
• Taxi or hotel-arranged pickup (usually simplest)

Where to base yourself:
• Andilana – calmer, “beach-first” feel
• Ambatoloaka / Madirokely – more restaurants and activity

What to do:
• Easy snorkeling from shore
• Kayak / paddle
• Short taxi hop to a quieter beach

Nosy Tanikely – Snorkeling & Turtles

Marine reserve close to Nosy Be.

Why it’s worth it:
• Clear water (on good sea days)
• Coral reef snorkeling
• Sea turtles are a common highlight

Logistics:
• Half-day boat excursion
• Usually easy to book locally (ask your hotel and compare recent reviews)
• Gear often included, but check in advance

Lokobe Reserve – Rainforest & Lemurs

A classic “Madagascar nature” day without heavy logistics.

Highlights:
• Rainforest atmosphere
• Lemurs (often black lemurs)
• Chameleons and small wildlife

Logistics:
• Boat transfer + guided walk (guides are typically part of the visit)
• Humid conditions, bring water and mosquito protection

Pace:
• Half day to full day (depends on tour format)

Nosy Komba – Island Hop

Small island between Nosy Be and mainland.

Highlights:
• Village atmosphere
• Short walks
• Lemurs are often the “main reason” people add it

Logistics:
• Short boat trip
• Often combined with a snorkeling stop depending on operator and sea conditions

Nosy Sakatia (Optional Marine Add-on)

A second snorkeling day works well here because sea conditions can vary.

Why add it:
• Different reef / different visibility conditions
• Often calmer and less “classic-tour” than the main routes

Seasonal Extension – Whale Watching

In season, humpback whales migrate through Madagascar waters.
Conditions are weather dependent
