Country: Panama 🇵🇦

Overview

Panama is one of the most convenient entry points to Central America, with extensive international connections via Tocumen International Airport (PTY).

It works well as:

  • A compact 5–7 day standalone trip
  • A regional hub before continuing to Costa Rica or Caribbean islands (e.g., Aruba, Belize, and others)

The country offers:

  • A modern and relatively safe capital
  • Easy access to tropical mountains
  • Both Pacific and Caribbean coast options

Overall time: 5–7 days
Main focus: city + canal, light nature, island or coastal extension
Best season: December–April (dry season)

Day 1–2 – Panama City & Panama Canal

Arrive at Tocumen International Airport (PTY).

Airport transfer:
- Uber is reliable and usually the easiest option
- Official airport taxis available
- Metro Line 2 connects the airport, but not very practical for most accommodations

Where to stay:
- Punta Pacífica, Costa del Este – modern and organized
- El Cangrejo – central and walkable

Main points of interest:
- Miraflores Locks – best place to observe ships passing through the canal
- Casco Viejo – colonial quarter (visit during the day and early evening)
- Cinta Costera – waterfront promenade with skyline views
- Metropolitan Natural Park – short rainforest trails within city limits

Panama City combines high-rise skyline with tropical surroundings.

Day 3–4 – El Valle de Antón

A small mountain town located inside an extinct volcanic crater (~2 hours from Panama City).

Altitude:
- ~600 m – noticeably cooler than the capital

How to get there:
- Rental car – easiest and most flexible
- Direct bus from Albrook Terminal (~2.5 hours)

What to see:
- Chorro Macho waterfall
- Cerro Gaital viewpoints
- Easy forest hikes
- Local weekend market

Road conditions are good and paved.

Stay:
- 1–2 nights

Option A – Santa Catalina & Coiba National Park

Pacific coast extension focused on marine life and calm atmosphere.

Best for:
- Snorkeling and diving
- Quiet beaches
- Coiba National Park boat excursions

How to get there:
- Rental car strongly recommended (4–5 hours)
- Public buses exist but require transfers and take most of the day

Coiba access:
- Only via organized boat tours
- Day trips arranged locally
- Protected marine reserve with strong biodiversity

Important:
- Limited infrastructure
- Reserve accommodation and tours in advance

Option B – San Blas Islands

Caribbean archipelago administered by the Guna community.

Best for:
- Simple island stays
- Clear water and white sand
- Short tropical escape

How to visit:
- Organized 4x4 + boat tours from Panama City
- Independent travel is complicated and not recommended

Conditions:
- Basic accommodations
- Cash required
- Electricity and comfort levels limited

1–2 nights is usually sufficient.
