Country: Philippines 🇵🇭

Overview

Palawan is widely considered the most scenic region of the Philippines. It is defined by limestone karst landscapes, turquoise lagoons, and calm island rhythms.

Key characteristics:

  • More expensive than Cebu or Luzon
  • Fewer crowds (outside peak season)
  • Strong focus on boat-based nature experiences
  • Requires clear logistics planning

This itinerary focuses on:

  • El Nido (dramatic lagoons and island hopping)
  • Coron (lakes, cliffs, and snorkeling)

Total duration: 7–12 days.

Arrival – El Nido

El Nido is one of the main highlights of Palawan and the usual starting point.

How to get there:
• Direct flight from Manila to El Nido (Lio Airport) – fastest and most expensive
• Flight to Puerto Princesa + van transfer (5–6 hours) – cheaper, much slower

What to expect:
• Small town with limited infrastructure
• Prices higher than most of the Philippines
• Focus on tours rather than independent exploration

Recommended stay: 3–5 days.

El Nido – Lagoons & Island Hopping

El Nido is famous for limestone cliffs, hidden lagoons, and emerald water.

Core activities:
• Island hopping tours (A, B, C, or D)
• Big Lagoon and Small Lagoon
• Secret beaches and limestone coves
• Snorkeling in clear, shallow water

Important notes:
• Tours are standardized and regulated
• Private tours are more expensive but calmer
• Independent boat travel is not realistic

This is a nature-first destination.
Evenings are quiet and low-key.

Recommended: 2–4 full days of island hopping.

El Nido → Coron (Sea Transfer)

Travel between El Nido and Coron by sea.

Options:
• Fast ferry (~4–5 hours)
• Multi-day expedition cruise (more expensive, very scenic)

Important:
• Sea conditions affect schedules
• Book with reputable operators only
• Allow buffer days in case of delays

Flying between El Nido and Coron is usually not practical.

Coron – Lakes & Cliffs

Coron offers a slightly different experience from El Nido.

Highlights:
• Kayangan Lake – iconic viewpoint and clear water
• Barracuda Lake – unique thermal layers
• Limestone cliffs and island viewpoints

Activities:
• Island hopping by boat
• Snorkeling
• Short hikes to viewpoints

Atmosphere:
• Calmer and less developed than El Nido
• Still tour-focused, but quieter in the evenings

Recommended stay: 3–4 days.

Return – Coron → Manila

Coron has a small airport (Busuanga Airport).

How to leave:
• Direct flight to Manila
• Limited flight schedules – book in advance

Coron works best as the final stop of the itinerary.

Logistics summary

  • Flights are the main time-saver but increase costs
  • Vans are slow and uncomfortable for long distances
  • Ferries depend heavily on sea conditions
  • Always plan buffer days

Palawan rewards patience and planning.

Cost expectations

  • Accommodation: higher than average for the Philippines
  • Tours: unavoidable and priced accordingly
  • Food: moderate, fewer budget options

Best season

Best time to visit:

  • December–April – dry season, calm seas

  • June–October – rainy season, ferry cancellations possible
