A classic East African itinerary combining:

  • Serengeti wildlife
  • Ngorongoro Crater
  • Additional northern circuit parks
  • Zanzibar island relaxation

Important logistics note:

  • This is not a self-drive itinerary.
  • Safaris are conducted with licensed driver-guides in 4x4 vehicles.
  • Distances between parks are large and handled within organized safari packages.

Main focus: wildlife + island
Best season: June–October (dry season, best wildlife visibility)

Travel Logic (Important)

You choose between:

Option 1 – Overland Safari (Most Common)

  • 4x4 vehicle with driver-guide
  • Lodges or tented camps
  • Road transfers between parks
  • Ends back in Arusha

Option 2 – Fly-In Safari (Higher Budget)

  • Small bush flights between parks
  • Less driving time
  • More expensive

After safari:

  • Internal flight to Zanzibar (ZNZ)

No realistic independent transport between parks.


Day 1 – Arrival (JRO) → Arusha


Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO).

Transfer:
- Lodge-arranged pickup recommended

Stay:
- 1 night in Arusha

Purpose:
- Rest
- Safari briefing
- No major sightseeing required

Day 2 – Tarangire National Park


Drive from Arusha (~2 hours).

Why Tarangire:
- Large elephant herds
- Baobab trees
- Good early safari introduction

Transport:
- Included in safari vehicle

Stay:
- Lodge or tented camp near park

Optional:
- Night game drive (if offered by lodge)

Day 3 – Lake Manyara (Optional) or Transit


Optional park stop depending on itinerary structure.

Lake Manyara:
- Tree-climbing lions (occasionally)
- Flamingos (seasonal)
- Lush forest scenery

Many itineraries skip this and drive directly toward Serengeti.

Transport:
- Safari vehicle only

Day 4–5 – Serengeti National Park


Drive or fly into Serengeti.

Why Serengeti:
- Big cats
- Large-scale savannah landscapes
- Great Migration (seasonal movement)

Transport options:
- 6–8 hour road transfer
OR
- 1-hour bush flight from Arusha

Stay:
- 2–3 nights inside Serengeti

Game drives:
- Early morning and late afternoon
- Full-day drives possible

This is the core safari experience.

Day 6 – Ngorongoro Crater


Drive from Serengeti to Ngorongoro.

Ngorongoro:
- Collapsed volcanic caldera
- Dense wildlife population
- High chance of rhino sightings

Game drive:
- Descend into crater early morning
- 4–6 hours inside

Stay:
- Lodge on crater rim or Karatu area

Day 7 – Return to Arusha


Drive back to Arusha (~4 hours).

End of safari.

Transfer:
- Direct airport transfer if flying same day
- Overnight in Arusha if flight next morning

Day 8 – Flight to Zanzibar


Flight from Arusha (ARK) or Kilimanjaro (JRO) to Zanzibar (ZNZ).

Duration:
- ~1 hour

Arrival:
- Pre-arranged hotel transfer recommended

Day 9–13 – Zanzibar Island


Zanzibar offers more variety than a simple beach stay.

Stone Town:
- UNESCO heritage area
- Historic architecture

Beaches:
- Nungwi / Kendwa – minimal tides, swimming anytime
- Paje / Jambiani – dramatic tides, long sand flats
- Matemwe – quieter, close to Mnemba Atoll

Marine activities:
- Snorkeling at Mnemba Atoll
- Dolphin trips
- Kayaking
- Starfish beaches (east coast)
- Big turtle sanctuary visits

Other activities:
- Spice farm tours
- Jozani Forest (red colobus monkeys)

Transport:
- Private drivers arranged by hotel
- Organized tours easy to book locally


Transportation Summary

Safari:

Between parks:

  • Road transfers inside safari

Safari → Zanzibar:

Zanzibar:
