Overview

A compact, scenic trip to Mendoza at the foothills of the Andes — the main gateway to Aconcagua, the highest mountain in the Americas.

Mendoza works well as:

  • a 3–5 day standalone Andes trip
  • a connection point for the classic overland route to Chile (Paso Los Libertadores)

Province: Mendoza
Overall time: 3–5 days
Main focus: Andes scenery, viewpoints, mountain roads
Best season: October–April for the High Andes road; winter is calmer but weather can affect mountain access

Arrival & Mendoza City

Arrive in Mendoza by flight or long-distance bus.

City highlights (easy, compact):
• Parque General San Martín (park walks, viewpoints)
• Cerro de la Gloria (city panorama + monument)
• Main plazas and central streets for a relaxed evening

Base:
• Mendoza city is the practical base for all day trips.

Potrerillos & foothills scenery

Potrerillos is the closest “mountain landscape” day.

Highlights:
• Potrerillos reservoir viewpoints
• Wide open foothills scenery
• Short walks and photo stops

How to visit:
• Rental car (most flexible)
• Half-day tours exist, but timing is fixed

Ruta Nacional 7 & High Andes

The classic Andes road linking Argentina and Chile.

Main stops (typical):
• Puente del Inca (natural stone bridge + mineral colors)
• Aconcagua Provincial Park viewpoints
• High mountain scenery along the whole RN7 corridor

Optional high point (weather and season dependent):
• Cristo Redentor / Paso Los Libertadores zone can reach ~4,000 m

How to visit:
• Rental car (best for stops and timing)
• Full-day guided excursion (simple logistics)
• Public buses are not designed for viewpoint stops and are not ideal for sightseeing days

What to expect:
• Wind and cold can happen even in summer
• Visibility changes fast; the best days are clear mornings

Transportation

  • Rental car gives the best experience on RN7 (stops + flexibility)
  • Tours are the easiest option if you don’t want to drive mountain roads
  • Public transport works inside Mendoza city; outside the city it’s limited for sightseeing

Connections

  • Mendoza ↔ Santiago, Chile (bus or direct flight)
  • Mendoza ↔ Bariloche (direct flights, not daily)
  • Mendoza ↔ Salta (direct flights, not daily)

Notes

  • The High Andes day is weather-sensitive; keep it flexible if possible
  • Altitude is moderate for most stops, but the border zone can be high and cold
