Overview
Southern Vietnam works well as a modular route with several distinct bases: Phu Quoc for beaches and island trips, Nha Trang for a developed coastal stay, Da Lat for cooler highlands, and Ho Chi Minh City for museums, architecture, and food.
Region: Southern Vietnam
Overall time: 10–14 days
Main focus: beaches, snorkeling, city culture, highlands
Best season: December–March; April can still work, while May–October is wetter
Phu Quoc – Beaches, Boat Trips & Snorkeling ▾
Phu Quoc is the most straightforward beach stop in southern Vietnam and works especially well in the dry season.
Why visit:
• Warm winter weather
• Several good beach areas for different styles of stay
• Easy access to snorkeling and island-hopping trips
Base:
• Long Beach for the most practical all-round stay
• Ong Lang for a quieter base
• An Thoi area only if island boat trips are the main priority
Places to visit:
• Sao Beach – one of the island's best-known white-sand beaches
• Ong Lang Beach – calmer atmosphere and a better base for slower stays
• Long Beach – long developed coast with many hotels and restaurants
• Starfish Beach – popular northern stop, better as a side trip than a base
• Southern islands – the main area for boat trips and snorkeling
• Vinpearl Safari Phú Quốc
How to get there:
• Flight from Ho Chi Minh City is the simplest option
• Ferries also connect Phu Quoc with the mainland if coming via Ha Tien or Rach Gia
What to know:
• The island is large enough that taxis, ride-hailing, or a rented scooter save time
• Snorkeling quality is usually better on organized southern island trips than directly from the main town beaches
Nha Trang – Urban Coast, Temples & Day Trips ▾
Nha Trang is a practical coastal city for a longer beach stay with a mix of urban convenience and day-trip options.
Why visit:
• One of the easiest beach cities in Vietnam for an independent stay
• Good combination of coastline, temples, and leisure activities
• Useful transport hub between Ho Chi Minh City, central Vietnam, and Da Lat
Base:
• Central Nha Trang near the beach for walkability and transport convenience
Places to visit:
• Po Nagar Cham Towers – the main historic site in the city
• Long Son Pagoda – well-known pagoda with a city viewpoint
• Beach promenade – easy for evening walks and short beach time
• VinWonders Nha Trang – large resort-style amusement park day on Hon Tre Island
• Mud baths – one of the more characteristic local activities
How to get there:
• Flight from Ho Chi Minh City is the simplest long-distance connection
• Train from Ho Chi Minh City works well if you prefer an overland route
• Bus or private transfer connects Nha Trang with Da Lat
What to know:
• Nha Trang is more developed and urban than Phu Quoc
Da Lat – Highlands, Waterfalls & Cooler Weather ▾
Da Lat gives a clear change of climate and landscape after the coast.
Why visit:
• Cooler temperatures
• Pine-covered hills and lakes rather than beaches
• Easy short sightseeing days without needing a long trek
Base:
• Da Lat city center for the whole stay
Places to visit:
• Linh Phuoc Pagoda – one of the city's most distinctive temples
• Truc Lam Monastery – quiet setting above the lake
• Cable car – useful for views and for reaching the monastery area
• Datanla Waterfall – accessible waterfall stop with developed visitor access
• Crazy House – unusual architecture and one of Da Lat's best-known landmarks
How long:
• 2–3 days is usually enough
• 1 day works well as an excursion from Nha Trang
How to get there:
• Bus from Nha Trang is the standard overland connection
• Domestic flights connect Da Lat with Ho Chi Minh City and some other cities
Ho Chi Minh City – Museums, Architecture & Food ▾
Ho Chi Minh City is the main urban base of southern Vietnam and the most useful point for arrival, departure, and side trips.
Why visit:
• Best museum concentration in the south
• Good mix of colonial-era buildings, temples, markets, and modern city life
Places to visit:
• Independence Palace – one of the key historical stops in the city
• War Remnants Museum – the most important history museum visit
• Ho Chi Minh City Museum – useful for broader city history
• Jade Emperor Pagoda – one of the best-known temple visits
• Zoo and Botanical Garden – good as a lighter stop within the city
How long:
• 2–4 days for the main city
Optional side trips:
• Cu Chi Tunnels – the most common historical excursion
• Mekong Delta – possible as a day trip, though an overnight stay gives a calmer experience
What to know:
• Ho Chi Minh City is the best point to place at the start or end of the route
